Leavenworth is a small city in the U.S. state of Kansas, population about 30,000 as of 2010. It is the county seat of Leavenworth County and was founded in 1867. The city is located on the banks of the Arkansas River, about 15 miles (24 km) north-northwest of Topeka and 60 miles (96 km) east-southeast of Wichita. The first inhabitants were Native Americans who hunted and gathered food near present day Leavenworth on what is now called Red Lake Creek. A fort was built by Captain James Hays in 1814 to protect settlers traveling through his territory and to defend against Comanche attacks. In 1827, General Don Carlos Manuel Rodriguez decided to move the capital from Mexico City to Topeka because he felt that Mexico City had become an unsafe place for American citizens due to its political instability. When Topeka became the new capital in 1829, Hays donated land at what is now known as Prairie View Cemetery for a new courthouse and town square, which became Leavenworth's first downtown area. In 1840, Leavenworth became part of Shawnee County when Lawrence County was created from parts of Shawnee and Wyandotte Counties. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Leavenworth served as one of three military camps within Kansas Army Corps Area 8b along with Fort Riley and Ft Sill because Confederate forces were moving southward towards Kansas City under General Robert Ewell's command. On November 1–3, 1861, Confederate soldiers burned crops near present day Lansdowne Circle in what is known as the Battle at Lansdowne Circle; this event helped boost Union morale in preparation for battle later that year against Confederate forces massing around Independence Hall in Philadelphia). The following year saw more battles fought withinKansas Army Corps Area 8b as Union troops advanced into Missouri towards Springfield while Confederates withdrew into Arkansas Territory; these skirmishes led to increased shelling by both sides throughout 1862 until Union advances finally forced Confederate commander Joseph Johnston to retreat back into Missouri on December 12th after losing 116 men killed or wounded along with 2 cannons captured during this engagement alone). Aftermath included 4 dead soldiers from Leavenworth militia detachment who were accidentally fired upon by Confederate artillerymen hours before their intended attack on Union encampment; this incident also earned them nickname " Cannon Fodder ". During Reconstruction years following America's reconstruction period following World War I (1918-1920), local businesses patronized African Americans seeking work opportunities despite discrimination still existing throughout much southern United States.), many white businessmen took advantage black male laborers working on their properties doing such things as hiring them out onto their streets late at night so they could get work done without fearof retribution or violence from locals or potential employers; some also did business with Indian tribes engaged in buffalo hunts over open areas such as Brown Deer Hills southwest of Topeka where several hundred Cherokee people lived according to anthropologist Claude Lefebvre). In 1955, Interstate 70 passing through centralLeavenworth prompted then Mayor Harry Bemis (D) unsuccessfully campaigned for mayoralty against incumbent Milton Meek (R), running on a platform pledging not interested in extending I-70 through town center although he favored building a bypass road connecting rural neighborhoods outside town limits directly via I-70 instead.). However plans emerged for Interstate 70/I-435 interchange just east/west of current downtownLevenwood even if Bemis had been elected mayor but never followed thru with his campaign promise.). Today DowntownLeaveon retains most if not all its original shopping districts including Main Street Southwestern Shopping Center (); Pioneer Square (); First National Bank Plaza (); Heritage Place (); Beale Street ; Illinois Avenue ; Asbury Heights Boulevard ()); upper level portions northeast sidelotting Springdale Community College District Courtyard Employment Services ().

Leavenworth lost its status as a major military stronghold after the end of the war, but it remains an important cultural center for Kansas.
