Leavenworth is a town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white men to set foot on what is now Leavenworth Territory were Willard and James Hutton in 1854. They named their new land "Hutton's Valley" after their friend and mentor, David Hutton. Ranch life in those days consisted of hoeing corn, planting beans and other vegetables, harvesting pumpkins from the earth during wintertime, building dwellings (the only ones then built were a few sod houses), caring for livestock and visiting friends and family on Indian Reservations nearby. A post office called Leavenworth was established in 1855, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1909. The community that would later be known as Leavenworth began to form around this time. In 1857 John Denton founded the first store here with his brother-in-law Darius Porterfield. By 1860 there were six stores and 30 residents here; by 1870 there were 21 stores and 400 residents here; by 1880 there were 42 stores and 1,000 residents here; by 1890 there were 50 stores and 4,000 residents here; all told Leavenworth had over 100 businesses involved in its economy by 1890 In 1865 he married Julia Cushing who made her home at 6th Street & Dodge Avenue where she ran a bakery until her death in 1951 In 1868 Jno Fenton bought some property east of town from Mr Porterfield for $4 per acre Fenton laid out four streets grid wise through his land making it into what we know today as Main Street In 1870 three more brothers joined up with Fenton – Hiram Gentry (with two shops), Elijah Ford (with one shop) John Wimer (with two shops) – forming the Gentry Brothers grocery store which anchored today's corner of Main Street & Dodge Avenue

Leavenworth is a town in Kansas, United States. The population was 8,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Leavenworth has been since 1867 the county seat of Jeffco County and had a population of 31,651 as of 2009. The first permanent settler in what is now Leavenworth was John Fenton in 1827. He homesteaded on land that would become Jeffco County. The community name "Leavenworth" originated from an old Scottish motto, "Heven for ever." The town site was laid out by James Hutton in 1857 after he purchased 3/4 mile (1 kilometer) of Indian River Road from David Wells Fargo and Company. Hutton named his new settlement after General Andrew Jackson's military campaign against Native Americans known as the Black Hawk War (1847-48). The town quickly grew into a thriving commercial center with its own newspaper and steamboat service during the late 19th century. In 1907, Leavenworth became the county seat when Jeffco County was created from parts of Johnson and La Salle counties following statehood within Kansas. The relocated county courthouse remained until 1959 when it was replaced by a new building designed by noted architect Minoru Yamasaki on Capitol Hill near downtown Leavenworth. During World War II, much activity took place within the surroundingJeffco Air Force Base which contributed to what is now known as "the Valley". Many local businesses were utilized including production of ammunition for planes used in combat over Europe; these activities ended after the war when aircraft manufacturing facilities were built elsewhere in Unified States located outside Jeffco County boundaries

The town grew rapidly due to its strategic location near the mouth of the Arkansas River and its access to timber resources.
