Gun cleaning and preservation has been a tradition in the Leavenworth area for many years. In 1871, John W. Davidson, an early settler in the area, opened a gunsmith shop on Main Street in Leavenworth. The store was the first business to sell firearms openly in Leavenworth. Over time, other businesses within the town began to offer firearm services as well. In 1903, Samuel Chapman organized a group of individuals interested in preserving firearms and founded the Kansas Gun Preservation Society (KGPS). The society published its first publication, “The Gun Collector’s Guide to Firearms Conservation”, in 1904. From this period until 1933, KGPS was the only organization devoted exclusively to gun conservation and education within the state of Kansas. In 1933, there were two major changes regarding gun cleaning and preservation within Kansas: The National Firearms Act (NFA) took effect and it became illegal to possess or sell any firearm without a valid permit from local authorities. As a result of these changes, KGPS disbanded completely and all activity ceased outside of special events such as NRA conventions or shoots sponsored by individual rifle clubs or groups. However, over time new organizations have emerged that continue to focus ongun safety and conservation particularly with respect to handguns. These organizations include Handguns for America which was founded in 1987; Safe House which was started in 2000; Windex & Lint Club which was founded in 2002; Shotgunners Supply Association which was started in 2006;Kansas Pistol Clubs Incorporated (KPCI) which was started in2007;and Kansas Gun Owners Federation (GOF)which is currently active with operations taking place at various locations throughout the state including Douglas County east of Wichita). It should be noted that while these organizations share some common goals they are not affiliated with one another formally nor do they operate under one single banner/identity

Leavenworth, Kansas is a city in Dodge County, Kansas, United States. The population was 10,846 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Dodge County by size and the second-largest city in Kansas. Leavenworth is home to Wright State University and the Leavenworth Army Depot. The town of Leavenworth was founded on July 16, 1868 by Major General George Armstrong Custer as part of a drive from Santa Rita Heights to Fort Riley and then down the Arkansas River to Wichita. The general's army stopped at a small creek called Weller Creek within sight of what would become Leavenworth because it had been discovered that water could not be brought up from under the Apache Hills during their march across Arizona Territory. In 1869, John Hays donated land for an armory and storehouse near what became downtown Leavenworth. By 1870, there were 2 schools in town - one for boys and one for girls - a hotel/motel and 3 stores. In 1871–72, A&P grocery store (now known as Goodyear Tire & Rubber) opened at Seventh Street between Walnut Avenue and Broadway Avenue; it was one of the first stores in town. Dodge City voters approved a $5 per capita tax levy on November 6, 1872 to fund military operations against Mexico during its war with Texas over annexation of that state into United States territory; this measure also provided funds for new schools in Dodge City as well as other needs such as street repairs necessary after heavy rains which caused flooding throughout much of central Kansas during winter months). On December 15th Cavalry Lieutenant David Ladd took command of forces attacking Mexican troops entrenched along Ulysses S Grant's old buffalo trail outside El Reno about northeast of present day Leavenworth; he named his force "Cavalry Squadron FOURTEEN" after General Custer's 4th Cavalry Regiment which had fought at Battle Of Palo Alto on October 26th1862 near today's Phoenix Ridge east of Phoenixville (the actual battle site has been determined by researchers to have taken place west off US Highway 191 just south of present day Altus)). Lt Ladd led 5 cavalry companies attack some 6 Mexican infantry regiments guided by artillery pieces across wide open terrain firefight lasting over 1 hour before withdrawing with heavy losses having lost 20% or more casualties killed or wounded while capturing numerous horses and equipment including cannons! This action helped spur Congress to create The Department Of War on January 8th1873 which later became The Bureau Of Indian Affairs! In 1875–76 Mrs Jane Seymour Stover operated busy bakery out front on 7th Street between Walnut Avenue & Broadway Avenue until she moved into her house next door on November 24th due to family illness; she left behind her busy bakery operation until around 1907 when baking became an all-day affair only available Sundays! During this time period evidence suggests that Indians smoked cigars instead of pipe tobacco like many other Native Americans due to lack thereof availability among whites) another early resident Mrs Caroline Beardsley died aged 95 years old from pneumonia contracted while caring for invalid mother who resided upstairs!) Another early resident Mrs Clara Potts passed away aged 83 years old from heart disease complications following childbirth!) Plymouth Congregational Church built circa 1865–67 stands still standing right next door looking straight ahead towards Main Street! Also located nearby was First Presbyterian Church built c1900s but demolished 2003!! Elmira Female Seminary built 1902 closed 2005 but remains standing insideoday’s building!!! Some interesting facts about local history include: Built atop bedrock dating back 400 Years – southwest corner property line between Locust Grove Road & Butternut Vale Road being where Stonehenge Monument now resides – construction began August 13 th 1787 by Captains James Wadsworth & Isaac Watts commanding unit exploring route through SW Wichita area
