Leavenworth is a small town located in the state of Kansas. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Topeka-Hutchinson, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. Leavenworth is known for its historic courthouse and old cotton mill buildings which are now used as apartments and retail shops. The first Europeans to visit what is now Leavenworth were French traders in 1680. A treaty was made between France and the United States on November 17, 1803, in which France ceded all of Kansas to America in return for protection from British aggression. The treaty allowed American settlers to settle in areas near present-day Wichita and Overland Park. In 1854, a post office was established at Leavenworth with the name of Hutchinsonville. In 1857, it changed its name to Leavenworth because of an influx of German immigrants who had come to Kansas after being driven out of their homes by Bannock Indians during the Bleeding Kansas crisis (1856-1858). In 1861, when Missouri successfully seceded from America and became a slave state, Kansas also seceded from America; this led to another round of land purchases by Americans looking for additions to their territory. On December 12, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order 6681 giving control over all public lands within Indian Territory west of Arkansas into private hands; this included much land that lay east of Missouri River including present-day Leavenworth County. On January 1st 1863, General Robert Ewing ordered General James Halleck’s Union Army encircle Fort Riley on the Wichita River opposite Topeka while General John Pope’s Confederate Army attempted an attack upstream on government installations at Sand Creek Ridge on April 14th 1863; both attacks failed due to bad weather conditions and lack of coordination among Union and Confederate forces (). Aftermath: On April 20th 1863 Major General Nathaniel Banks arrived at Fort Riley with orders to begin negotiations for peace under cover of darkness; these negotiations led indirectly to Ulysses S Grant becoming Commandant general USArmy Topeka District on May 15th 1863 (). The last resident died in 1989; today there are only a few remaining local residents
