The city grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to heavy industry such as lumbering and wagon manufacturing; however World War I destroyed much of this industry and led to a significant loss in jobs throughout the region. However, Leavenworth bounced back quickly with new industries such as plastics and electronic equipment development followed by a rapid growth in retail services during the 1990s until Katrina caused extensive damage to many businesses including stores within walking distance of downtown which lead to closures throughout much of 2001-2002
