In 1869, Leavenworth was chosen as the site for the US Military Academy. The area around present-day Leavenworth has been inhabited by the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes since before European settlement. In 1868, General Order No. 9 of Colonel James Ewing's 1st Kansas Volunteer Cavalry ordered all soldiers in this territory to Secure their persons with fetters or similar restraint while on official duty. This order is considered a legal precedent that firearms must be stored unloaded and locked in vehicles while on military property. The first firearm to be used in combat at the US Military Academy was an American rifle belonging to Cadet Private First Class John Fetterman of West Point cadet battalion #2, which he acquired from his instructor Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer during Custer's final battle at Little Bighorn on July 26, 1876 (the only confirmed battle using firearms). During World War II, several pistols were mounted on tanks and used against Japanese troops near Loyola Gulch north of Fort Riley; however these weapons were not armed with rounds capable of penetrating armor so they did not enter into common use until well after World War II when rifles became more effective at engaging large numbers of enemy combatants with round accuracy

Leavenworth is a small city in Leavenworth County, Kansas, United States. The population was 697 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1854 by John C. Leavenworth and named after General George Armstrong Custer, who had fought in the American Civil War and died near there on July 5, 1876. The first post office at Leavenworth was established in 1855; it changed its name to Leavenworth in 1865. The first store opened at 414 First Street in 1861. In 1870, the railroad reached Leavenworth and became an important factor in its growth; by 1910, it had a population of 2,500 people. In 1902–03, when Wichita began rapid expansion eastward into what is now Johnson County (the new county formed from parts of Hancock and Larimer counties following Kansas’ admission to the Union on November 16, 1912), Leavenworth lost much of its commercial importance but retained some status as a popular summer resort for families with children; by 1916 it had regained most of its former prominence as a tourist destination for visitors to Wichita and other nearby towns. In 1924–25 Charles Lindbergh visited Wichita while en route to New York City; his airplane hangar and landing field were located just north of town on the old civil airport property which has been developed into Center Park Place Mall since that time. After returning home he made several public appearances including one before Congress at Lincoln Hall (now Independence Hall) which helped promote American aviation internationally through his example After Lindbergh's death many rumors circulated about his final resting place including suggestions that he be buried near Midway Airport or inside Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport where he had lived since 1927 On December 20th 2006 KUSA-TV aired an report about finding tombstones for two Unknown pilots who have never been positively identified as either Charles Lindbergh or Wiley Postman off Interstate 35W near Garden City OK
Leavenworth was founded in 1867 by members of the Kansas Territorial Legislature as a cattle and horseback country town. The town grew rapidly, and in 1881 it became the county seat of Leavenworth County. In 1907, Leavenworth became an independent city.
