Grant Boulevard. At that time, open carrying of firearms was still illegal in Kansas City County; however, as this event happened outside of that county limits, no one was injured as a result. A few weeks later on October 15th, 1861 another shooting took place when two men - John Ladd and James Ahern - fired at a group of farmers east of town while they were driving across the state line into Nebraska Territory. No one was injured as a result of these shootings; however, it is interesting to note that these events occurred about 100 miles north-east of Wichita Falls which was then the capital city of Texas

Leavenworth is a city in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 9,871 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1854 as the town of New Leavenworth by farmers who were relocated from eastern Kansas to this area. The early settlers were mainly farmers and mechanics. The city was named for General George Washington Leavenworth (1784-1863), one of President James K. Polk's Generals during the American Civil War. The first post office at Leavenworth was established on April 15, 1854, and served until July 3, 1855. The first store in town was operated by J.P. Bemis and Wm Sutherlin; the business closed about 1865 when a new store opened with $5 per week rent from Hennepin Bank. A locomotive driving a cart road pulled a small wagon train to market each day from the company depot near present-day Parshall south to Prairie Village where goods were sold and passengers picked up again at night; stopping also at various other local points along the way including Florissant Springs on Mayflower Creek and Lawrenceburg on Ottawa Creek before arriving in town late Sunday afternoon or early Monday morning. In 1861, Leavenworth became part of Dodge City–Eliot Township when it was organized as an independent township within Sedgwick County; its boundaries then followed that of Dodge City east to Thalia Avenue north (including what is now First National Bank building). In 1903, Dodge City annexed Eliot Township which included most of modern Leavenworth except for some unincorporated areas lying east of Interstate 35W between downtowns Wichita and Topeka (and later Menomonie). At this time much of northern Sedgwick County had been lost to purchased land byzoners following Kansas Statehood including many villages such as Newtonia (now North Newton), Alva (now Guthrie), Overland Park (now Olathe) and Salina (nowKansas City). In 1907 however Leavenworth annexed most of southeastern Hebard Township including its largest community - Topeka - making it once again part of Sedgwick County although surrounded entirely by Dodge City suburban development until its annexation into Eliot Township in 1903 finally resolving any boundary issues between those two townships/counties that had remained separate since 1860 despite their mutual residents having moved away generations earlier! Levenworth experienced rapid growth following World War II due largely to military spending associated with nearby Fort Riley which led to numerous businesses being established here including defense contractor Raytheon Missile Systems Corporation among others while new housing developments sprang up all around the city limits just outside typical grocery stores/restaurants adjacent to busy highway expressways serving both Fort Riley garrison troops barracks stationed here as well as major military airports located only a few miles away like Wichita International Airport - all providing easy access to plenty of employment opportunities right next door! However today much smaller portions inside Eliot Township still do not have same job opportunities available plus recently revised zoning regulations have made some formerly industrial buildings used primarily for agriculture or light manufacturing rather than commercial purposes becoming more popular overnightspotresidential complexes instead leading many people wondering if today's "burgeoning" economy might actually be slowing down quite substantially?
In 1881, Leavenworth was the site of a cattle drive that brought in over 1,000 head of beef. The town's first post office was established in 1883. In 1907, Leavenworth became the county seat for neighboring Hennepin County.
