The first white settlers in Leavenworth were James and Susannah Kiel in 1854. They named their farm "Kiel's Prairie." In 1856, they opened a small store and post office in what is now the downtown area of Leavenworth. The first school in Leavenworth was built on Main Street in 1857; it served as a day school until 1907. In 1865, the government of Haskell County organized as an independent county and bought land east of present-day Leavenworth from James Kiel. The community grew quickly, with several stores and homes being built along US Highway 24 (now MO 9). On July 1, 1886, the name of the town was changed to Leavenworth after General John A. Logan who fought against Native American forces during the Mexican–American War at San Juan Hill near Pecos River. In 1912, local farmers formed a cooperative to grow corn for export to Europe; this crop failed due to lack of rain but helped start a new industry that would thrive throughout the 20th century: trucking hay bales across country for use as insulation or fuel for automobiles Leavenworth is located at (39°15′2″N 95°19′38″W).
