The first settlement in what is now Leavenworth was made by families of Dutch and English descent who arrived from upstate New York in 1825. They named their new community Ephraim after Judah (Ephraim) Smith, an early settler in that area. The town site was donated by James Krieger to the Presbyterian Church in 1851 as part of its missionary program to Indian Territory. The first church built there was dedicated on December 12, 1852. A post office called Ephraim was established in 1857 and remained open until it closed in 1907; its operators were Daniel Hague and Wm. Hays. In 1861 Leavenworth became a railroad town when the Kansas Pacific Railroad reached it from Topeka via Council Grove and Girard City. Passenger service continued until 1963 when all passenger trains were discontinued due to budget cuts at the time. Today, only freight service remains within Leavenworth limits; this includes deliveries to local businesses located inside of 100 yards of the railway depot on Main Street NW (now US 421). In 1965 Wichita State University moved from Morningside Heights, Manhattan, Kansas to Leavenworth following a university relocation campaign led by then-Kansas Governor Samuel Denton Johnson II after Wichita State's football team won the NCAA championship game that year over Oklahoma State University. At about this same time also several other large universities - including UIUC and Wichita State - relocated from downtowns across Kansas City metropolitan areas following US Supreme Court rulings granting statehood to many formerly slave states during Reconstruction era America: these institutions would become known as "the new South". From 1966 through 1972 major league baseball played its annual All-Star Game at Municipal Stadium between American League teams based outside of Chicago; prior to that games had been played at Comiskey Park which had been home since 1903 for both American League teams and then-National League teams (the NL All-Star Game having originated with an event held back home in Cincinnati that season). In 1969–1970 auto racing took center stage when NASCAR began using Municipal Stadium as its temporary track for small races before returning to Comiskey Park later that year; today Municipal Stadium serves primarily as a concert/ sporting venue as well as being used by high school boys' soccer games among other events unrelated to motorsports.-Races have taken place there every year since then., but most recently on July 6th 2017 an NASCAR race took place which was headlined by Brad Keselowski driving his car down Main Street NW into turn one.# From 1945 until 2003 Municipal Stadium served primarily as a playground for Little Rock residents during Arkansas summers.; however starting around 2003 some activities here started moving indoors such as dodgeball/ softball lessons & dance rehearsals
