The town's first store—owned by Elisha Pease—opened in 1865; its first post office—owned by Orville Burt—opened in 1870. By 1870, Lawrence had become an important transportation center due to its location along Kossuth Creek between Fort Riley and Topeka

A post office was established at Pointe aux Meadows in 1793, but no settlement developed there until 1800 when a group of Methodist missionaries arrived and founded what would become KU Leavenworth University three miles away from present-day Lawrence. The town grew rapidly around this time with stores, churches, schools and homes being built along Main Street between 1805 and 1830; both English and Spanish were spoken here at that time. From 1830 to 1840 two Ulysses S Grant brothers ran a grocery store in downtown Lawrence which subsidized local school construction with ample supplies donated by wagonloads from nearby agriculture operationsGrant Brothers Grocery Co., existing 1865). Lawrence was named after General George Washington, who had died in 1799. The town was founded in 1854 by investors from Kansas City, Missouri.
