Lawrence, KS is a city in Topeka County, Kansas, United States. The population was 20,827 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Topeka County. The University of Kansas School of Law is located in Lawrence. A group including Frenchman Francois Marquette and American George Armstrong Custer landed at the mouth of the Wichita River on October 16, 1814 on their way west to find a route to California. They were not welcomed by the Native Americans who thought they were hostile animals coming to steal their food. Custer's party made an unprovoked attack on a small band of Agency Indians led by Chief Washakie on November 4th; this event became known as Battle: Kansas or Burying Indian at Topeka (now part of Wichita). The resulting treaty ceded most of present-day Topeka and parts adjacent to it back to the Agency Indians and created what is now Shawnee County. On July 12, 1871, John Douglas founded Lawrence when he moved from Overland Park, KS with his family during the GreatKansasFamine. When Douglas found that wheat farming would not work in central Kansas because there was no water available for irrigation, he started planting potatoes instead which did well but required more care due to cold weather damage done during winter months. He then decided that planting maize would be more successful and began doing so in earnest in 1872 using improved seeds brought over from Mexico by Manuel Lisaño de la Vega y Costilla y Pacheco with help from United States Army Captain Jesse Benton Riley. By 1886 corn had also become an important crop in western Kansas due to increased demand from railroad construction crews working through nearby Oklahoma Territory
