Lawrence, Kansas is a city in the US state of Kansas. The population was 34,844 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County and the largest city in Butler County by area. Lawrence is situated on the eastern edge of Johnson County and it straddles the border of Shawnee and Osage Counties. McCloskey with materials donated by General George Armstrong Custer's family during his campaign for governor of Kansas (the current Topeka Fairgrounds were built as part of that effort). In 1872, John Walker founded another trading post just east of present-day downtown Lawrence; this became known as "Walker's Fort". In 1880, Isaac Roberts organized a group to purchase 240 acres (100 hectares) northeast of present-day downtown Lawrence for $25 per acre ($4 million then), forming what would become known as Roberts Land Company; this land served as the original core of what would be called "Lawrence" – only about two-thirds Of that total had been purchased whenRoberts died in 1881 without havingitled his estate to all or any portionof his purchase price. The remaining land was divided among several other investors before being sold to George Wickersham in 1888 for $10 per acre ($2 million then). Wickersham renamed it "Wickerham Land Company", later merged into Generalprompt fame with Armour & Co., one half owner thereof until its acquisition by Microsoft Corporation in 1999 A fire destroyed much agricultural activity within Johnson County during an drought Outbreak on October 24, 1861; this event helped spur population growth within Butler County which soon followed Governor Andrew Johnson ordered military forces under General Alfred Smedley Butler to quench local unrest caused by abolitionist sentiment throughout most western United States including parts adjacent to central KS On July 6 1863 Union troops burned down Brownells Fort following an altercation over politics within company This event eventually led to open warfare between these armies across both states leading ultimately to secession from Missouri
