One year later law professor Cushing Wilde also set up shop here: The University of Kansas Law School began operations on October 17th 1870 with just 11 students under faculty guidance from Professor George Washington Bainbridge (later one of the most influential Supreme Court Justices). With such impressive beginnings came rapid growth; by 1880 some 1 1000 people lived Downtown & Neighboring Streets! Lawrence quickly became known as "the economic capital of central Kansas" due to its many thriving businesses which attracted highly educated professionals from all over America including lawyers (including George Washington Bainbridge), farmers, merchants and scientists who developed much key early technology including electric lighting and refrigeration – these pioneers would help shape not just future technologies but also modern American culture overall! In 1893 major tornado damage struck downtown Lawrence – this event would serve as a turning point for both local officials’ attention towards immediate recovery efforts following natural disasters & eventually lead to establishment of physical infrastructure specifically designed for post-disaster recovery like levees & drains etc., which still exist today! It wasn't until 1907 that Wichita Falls erected their own municipal government making Wichita Falls Larger than Lawrence by almost 2 centuries! Over time[], however]Lawrence's economic power gradually waned due largely(but not exclusively)to several factors:(1) increasingly larger cities popping up throughout central KS while Lawrence declined economically because its core function changed from rural manufacturing into service economy;(2) decline in agricultural values resulting from higher costs associated with new technologies during World War II;& finally(3) suburbanization of eastern & southern parts of town which removed vast areas away from production agriculural economies creating large job losses opportunities for locals adversely impacting quality of life qualityoflife issues faced by Central KS today

One such problem was that most streets in downtown were too wide for cars to navigate without getting turned around or being entirely clogged up with traffic signals at intersections; this resulted in frequent accidents that killed both drivers and passengers on average each year between 1887 and 1925.[1] In 1925, Mayor George Kessler ordered streetcars placed on some blocks near downtown so that pedestrians could easier access central business district functions such as shopping,[2] which helped reduce these issues throughout much of downtown;[3] however, this order did not go into effect until 1927 because City Council members objected to having TOYOTA trucks driving through their neighborhoods every day during rush hour![4][5] In 1926–27, Lawrences citizens began protesting against high rates charged by telephone companies for long distance service; they succeeded in killing two bills proposed by Hutchinson (the Telephone Company Bill No 297 and 309) because they were seen as government overreach into private enterprise.[6][7][8] It should be noted that there are several theories about why Hutchinsons bill passed: one suggests that opposition to large phone companies came from businessmen who saw them as threats to their economic dominance over smaller businesses,[9]; another argues thatTelephone Company President Harry Hardwick saw his competition disappearing due largely to new technologies like radio,[10] while still others suggest Hutchison’s belief that long-distance telecommunications would eventually be substitute for traditional transportation services like railways[11][12][13][14], given enough time/investment

In 1870, the Ames-Langston Railroad was built through Lawrence and the city became a railroad town. Lawrence experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century thanks to its status as a center for industrialization and its location on the western edge of Kansas Territory. The population of Lawrence reached 100,000 by 1910 and it had surpassed 150,000 by 1920. Growth slowed during World War II but resumed after the war when Kansas began to explore oil reserves in nearby Wichita County. The population of Lawrence peaked at over 300,000 in 1970 but has since declined slightly due to migration to other cities in Kansas and elsewhere.
