Gun magazines have a long and varied history in Lawrence, Kansas. The first magazine to be published in the town was the "Liberty" Rifle and Pistol Club's "Standard Armory." This magazine was established in 1871. The first gun shop in Lawrence was opened by Wm. H. Donnellan in 1875. Charles Bickford, who served as Mayor of Lawrence from 1911-1913, is credited with the start of the city's gun culture when he purchased several handguns from John Sells at his store on Third Street. The early years of powderhorn magazines were not without controversy; townsfolk often objected to their presence because they believed that such items constituted an indiscriminate source of firearms ammunition. In 1892, however, the city Council passed an ordinance allowing for the importation of powderhorns into the city limits for use ingunsmithing purposes only. At this time, Larry Aiken*, president of National Importers Syndicate (NIS), had been importing large quantities of arms grade powderhorn from Europe for local armorers and pistolsmiths due to shortages caused by World War I*. NIS soon became one of the largest importers of guns and ammunition in America* (* Larry Aiken later became mayorof Lawrence). In 1904, three brothers – Harry Evershed (Harry & Fred), Clarence Dillingham (Clarence) & Willis Hargrave – founded Mid-America Arms Company Ltd., which manufactured pistols and revolvers under license from Colt * (*Charles Bickford also joined Mid-America Arms Company Ltd.). Following World War II*, Colt began producing American made pistols under licence exclusively for Mid-America Arms Company Ltd.* (*Willis Hargrave died suddenly while serving as President & CEO of Mid-America Arms Company Ltd.) *(*Mid-America Arms Co., Ltd., later merged with Remington Rand Corp.) After World War II*, many new manufacturers entered into the revolver market thanks to post-war government policies aimed at resurrecting manufacturing job numbers within specific industries *. Among these new Manufacturers were Sturm Ruger Manufacturing Corporation (founded 1949), Winchester Ammunition Corporation (Winchester Ammunition Inc.), Browning Firearms Incorporated (Browning Firearms Corp.), Kimberley Industries Inc.(Kimberley Industries Holding Corporation) and most notably Savage International Inc.*(*Savage brand rifles started being produced by Savage Armament Corporation.) Following enactment by Congress Of The Brady Bill On May 14th 1994®, all assault weapons must be registerd with state police before they may be sold or possessed In Kansas (*Kansas has a 2nd amendment right to bear arms). As a result Of The Brady Bill And ensuing Gun Registration Requirement*, many old fashioned muzzleloading rifle cartridges such as blackpowder shotgun balls became obsolete† (*New Model Carbine chambered in 7mm Remington Magnum among other calibers still able to be fired using old style muzzleloading rifle cartridges). Rifle magazines continued to be used into the 1960s and 1970s, but handgun magazines became more popular beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s due to advances in technology that made shooting targets easier to hit with handguns than previous generations
