By 1870 all but two buildings in town had been built, and the population had reached 25 thousand people. In 1872–3 oil was discovered at Wildcat Hill outside present-day Wichita; as production increased and prices rose, merchants and entrepreneurs started buying up land around Lawrencesville for ranching and farming purposes. As access to oil resources improved, KC&A Railway began construction from Topeka through western Douglas County on an route running through downtown Lawrence; because railroads shortened travel time from one side of Missouri to the other (and from eastern Kansas into Nebraska), this allowed farmers to sell their products along newly developed routes such as Interstate 70 across state lines into southern Nebraska
Lawrence was founded by the Kansas Territorial Legislature in 1855 as a future city on the site of an ancient Indian village. The town grew rapidly, and in 1861 it became the capital of Kansas. In 1865, Lawrence was named the state's new capital; and in 1907, it became the first city in America to be designated a World Heritage Site.
