Lawrence, Kansas was the site of one of the first gunfights in America. On November 14, 1872, two groups ofUnion soldiers were fighting for control of a strategic town on the Wichita River. The Union army had already deployed large numbers of troops to try and quell the violence, but as night began to fall, Confederate forces began to pour into Lawrence from surrounding towns. The Union soldiers were outnumbered and outgunned; they didn't stand a chance against the Confederate force. One man decided that he would need help getting away from the battle: Captain John Wilson's battery of artillerymen. The captain ordered his men to run upriver towards Liberty Arsenal (now Lawrence Municipal Airport), where they could take refuge in case reinforcements arrived. As they ran away, some members of the Confederate force fired on them and killed Wilson and several other officers. This event is generally considered to be Lawrence's first gunfight. Since then, many people have fought in Lawrence because it has been an important center for firearms manufacturing and trade – both before and after the Civil War.
