Lansing is a town in Haskell County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,014 at the 2010 census. Lansing was founded in 1881 by James A. Lansing and his wife Esther L. Barnes and named for Lansing's brother-in-law John A. Beardsley. Lansing was part of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway before it was bought by the Union Pacific Railroad in 1909. The railroad built a station here on the east side of town to serve as a link between Atchison and Santa Fe Springs stations on the west side of the county. The first post office in Lansing was established in 1881, but no mail reached it until 1885 because of transportation problems caused by cattle drives over the Arkansas River from Wichita to Topeka. In 1907, the local paper published an issue announcing that "the present post office will close on Monday [July 5] . . ." The new post office opened on July 12th with Wm Hargrave as its first director. In 1911, when Kansas became a state, Lansing incorporated as a city under Act 6 of that year; its name changed to Lansing proper in 1963 after becoming an independent municipality within Haskell County subject only to county government rules and regulations. On November 2nd of that year residents voted not to annex any other towns within Haskell County despite this vote having been announced months earlier statewide through flyers distributed throughout the county urging such action; instead they formed their own municipal government which lasted until 1974 when all municipalities within Haskell were consolidated into one single entity under federal law known as “incorporation” or “municipal consolidation” which took effect January 1st1975). As part of this process, most municipally owned businesses were sold off including most downtown businesses including those belonging to Mayor Wm Hargrave himself who now lives out his final days at his home on Main Street just south of City Hall This entire period from 1891 until 1975 can be considered one long campaign waged by Mayor Hargrave against annexation efforts by other municipalities located east or northwest of him culminating in his successful attempt to keep Lansing separate from these more populous neighbors during what has come to be known as “The Great Annexation War”
