Lansing, Kansas is a town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Topeka–Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lansing was founded in 1881 by James A. and Cilla Gossett and named for Lansingburgh, New York. The community was platted in 1881 when James A. Gossett and his wife Cilla bought of land from Abram Hagerman and others in what is now Shawnee County. The name Lansing originated with an early settler who selected the name for his new home because it resembled the village of Leningrad, Russia where he had been born into a family of Russian immigrants. Lansing's first post office opened in 1885. In 1907, Lansing became one of six towns within Topeka City limits to be consolidated into one city under the leadership of Mayor Addison Burchardt. At that time it had a population of 2,500 residents; however by 1920 its population had grown to 11,000 residents due largely to waves of immigration from Eastern Europe which began during World War I and continued through World War II (the era when Topeka became an open-air air military base). Today, Lansing remains as one of Topeka's most diverse communities with many ethnic backgrounds including Germans/Alsatians/Ukrainians/Russians/Jews (from Belarus), Poles (from Ukraine), Mexicans (of all nationalities) and Asians (chiefly Japanese). During prohibition years from 1919 until 1933 much alcohol was sold from local stores by bootleggers operating out of farmhouses or barns on nearby rural tracts west of town; these operations were considered legal because liquor sales were exempt from excise taxes levied on other items such as groceries. Although Prohibition ended in 1933 after nationwide repeal by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, some illicit liquor operations continue until this day outside town limits although they are no longer tolerated by law enforcement authorities
