When Lansing was established, it was one of the first towns in this area. It grew rapidly during the early 1900s due to railroad construction and agricultural production. After World War II, Lansing declined as its population dwindled due to various factors including a lack of jobs and social changes that took place in Kansas during that time. However, over the past few decades Lansing has seen an increase in population and development. Today, Lansing is a thriving community with many businesses and cultural opportunities available. The history of Lansing began with settlers who arrived in 1879 from Illinois. They were primarily farmers who developed land around what is now downtown Lansing. In 1905, the first train ride into Wichita originated from Lansing Junction on the Cairo-Kansas City Railroad (now Great Western Railway). This transportation innovation allowed goods unloaded on trains at Station Square to be transported quickly and easily to marketplaces throughout Wichita and Sedgwick County (today’s Hutchinson). This growth led to increased development around downtown Lansing which included new housing projects such as Washburne Hills (1915), Grandview Heights (1925), Liberty Park (1929), West Side Village (1945)and Kirkwood Meadows (1989). This period also saw significant infrastructure investment such as completion of a freeway system connecting Wichita with Topeka and other nearby cities by way of Binghamton Lake Boulevard/I-435W; construction of a new high school for Douglas High School in 1970; addition of retail spaces within old industrial buildings along I-435W; as well as renovations to existing facilities such as Pritchard Auditorium which became home to The Kansas Philharmonic Orchestra from 1984 through 2006 before moving into its current location adjacent to First Baptist Church in 2003. Lansing experienced rapid growth following World War II when demand for workers increased Due largely to military spending in Japan which created vast amounts of blue-collar employment across America (). Growth continued through the post-war years with successive waves of immigrants arriving until about 2000 when their numbers had peaked (), leading slowly but surely towards contraction ().
