In 1921, it merged with nearby Topeka to form the new metropolitan area that includes all of Lawrence County and most of Shawnee County. Lansing has been an important center for agricultural production for many years. The city's largest employer is K-12 education with over 50% of the employees being teachers or administrators; other large employers include Boeing Company (Boeing Facility), Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM), Wichita State University (Wichita State campus), and Microsoft Corporation (Microsoft Campus). The city also has several smaller businesses such as agrochemical company Monsanto corporation, meatpacking company Tyson Foods Corporation, insurance company Farmers Insurance Company, glassmaker Lehigh Valley Glass Works Inc., and chemicalmanufacturer Monsanto corporation's Poly Equine Laboratories division headquarters complex on east Main Street just outside town limits which houses research laboratories for both Monsanto and Syngenta AG products The downtown core contains a mix of Victorian architecture from the late 19th century through to the 20th century mixed with modern buildings erected since then including two high-rise office towers: OneCompleted in 2006 by real estate developer Larry Sandsburg Jr.; and one completed in 2009 by Lennar Inc., owner of Home Depot International Incorporated In recent years there have been plans to rehabilitate much of downtown Lansing into an arts district including designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its significance as both an important cultural center for Eastern Kansas during post-World War II boom times while also drawing attention to potential preservation issues around lost commercial fabric within plaza areas along First Avenue North between I streets NW and Phelps Street NE

In 1867, the United States government bought the land that makes up Lansing, Kansas from the Creek Indians. The first white person to live in Lansing was C.F. Yates, who started a hotel and grocery store in 1868. In 1870, the town had a population of just six people. In 1907, Lansing became an unincorporated community and has since declined in popularity.
