Lansing, Kansas is a town in and the county seat of Linn County, Kansas, United States. The population was 9,836 at the 2010 census. Lansing was founded in 1871 by Danish immigrants and named for Michigan's Lansing Township. It was renamed Lansing in 1912 after General John F. Lansing who served as Commander-in-Chief of the Union Army during the American Civil War. Lansing located on both banks of the Arkansas River and became a popular boomtown due to its good soil, water supply, and location near military installations such as Fort Hays and Fort Riley. In 1887, Lansing was chosen as the site for an important railroad junction that would connect Topeka with Wichita Falls (now Wichita). The first train arrived in Lansing on December 1, 1887. The town rapidly grew into a commercial center with several large businesses including Armour & Co., Jardine Tool Works, Wernigerode Plastics Company (now Alliant Techsystems), Standard Oil Company of Kansas City (later ExxonMobil), Lever Brothers Grain Elevators, Ford dealership #2 (later KFC), US Rubber company plant #1 (later Chevrolet), Dodge car factory #1 (later Chrysler) and many others. In 1916 when World War I began, local residents joined together to form what is now known as "The League of Nations." They raised money through bake sales and concerts to support the war effort; however some members decided not to fight because they disagreed with America's involvement in Europe. After World War I ended in 1918 without any victory for either side, many people left Lansing for new opportunities elsewhere due to economic depression which had started in America just before this war ended. Many residents from Lansing decided to move westward across country following President Woodrow Wilson's New Deal programs which aimed to revive manufacturing industry throughout America during these difficult times. This migration led to increased competition for jobs within communities along Interstate 80; however it also helped create new industries such as truck driving and printing presses which helped revitalize downtown Lansing during this time period
Lansing was founded in 1854 as the capital of what is now the state of Kansas. The town was named for General James K. Lansing, who had been appointed governor of the territory in 1850. The site for Lansing was chosen because it would be a convenient location for traders and travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1868, Lansing became the seat of government for what is now Kansas.
