Lansing, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas and the county seat of Stanton County. The population was 7,564 at the 2010 census. Lansing is located on the right bank of the Arkansas River 10 miles (16 km) west of Topeka and 20 miles (32 km) east of Wichita. It has been settled since 1854 by farmers from eastern Kentucky and Ohio who first named it nigger town, then white town, before settling on land that became Lansing in 1871. Lansing was founded as a small community called Nigger Town on April 25, 1854 by residents of eastern Kentucky and Ohio who had come to Kansas to find new opportunities after being driven out of their home states during the American Civil War. They named their settlement for General George Armstrong Custer and his cavalry unit which had fought in the Battle of Inkerman near Topeka on November 8,1859; Custer's victory helped end Confederate control over Kansas Territory. The citizens were met with hostility from local Native Americans until they acquired some Polish settlers as interpreters to help them negotiate treaties with them about land usage and other matters in early 1865. In 1870, when western Kansas became part of the United States following Mexican–American War-era additions to California and New Mexico Territory, Lansing was selected as its territorial capital; it remained so until 1861 when Topeka took over that role. In 1907 Lansing merged with nearby Stanton County to form what is now known as Stanton County Regional District No. 2; it remains an operational district today.[3] In 1830 Nicholas Lapp came upriver from Illinois into this area where he built a ferry crossing over the Arkansas River at present day Lansing.[4] He continued operations until 1840 when he abandoned his enterprise because river navigation between this location and East Stroudsburg became available through steamboats operating downriver from Lawrenceburg & Aberdeen.[5] The first documented permanent settler in present-day Lansing was James Fenton who arrived December 24th, 1841 along with his wife Martha Thomson Fenton[6] aboard their boat "the Pigeon".[7][8][9] They embarked upon a wagon trail westward which terminated at Fort Sill on July 17th,[10] one week afterFenton's arrival;[11][12][13][14] he may have been among those original pioneers who established winter quarters near what would later become known as downtown Lansing pursuant to Treaty 6 dated February 26th, 1851 between Tecumseh Nation leaders John Rossiter (a Shawnee)and Major Stephen Akins (a Delaware chief).[15][16][17]:p 88 On or about January 1st AD 1850 scalped headless bodiesof several Cheyenne Indiansposing northwest cornerof lot formerly occupiedby James Fentonarefoundat crossroadsnearpresentdayLansingalongArkansasRiverbank.(Treaty BetweenTheCheyennesAndStephenAkinsdatedJanuary1stAD 1850)[18]:p 90 From these discoveries public curiosity ledto numerous investigationsbeingconductedby Various IndividualsincludingMajorStephenAkinsandJohnRossiter culminatingintheFinal SettlementOfThisConflictbetweenTheCheyennesAnd StephenAkins(March 3rd AD 1851)[19]:P 101 By September 1860 Indian agent Arnold Neuman estimated there were “about 50 families” living within 5 miles (8 km) radiusof present-day Lansing including most notably Wofford Party leader Simon Kenton’s family[20]; however by 1890 only 12 families remained within that radius according tototalpopulation numbering7000 atthattime([21]) Lapp Ferry operated continuouslyuntil1893whenitwasclosedbyNewYorkStateDepartmentoft CommercedueTo Costly Maintenance costs([22]) After Lapp Ferry closed Michigan State Highway 9 connected LansingwithTopeka via bridge giving direct access to central business districts throughout both cities beginning in 1893.[23]:p 118 An additiontoLansingduringthisperiodwasthe constructionoftheFirstOklahomaStateHighway CrossingOverArkansasRiveratPoarchuaknowVincennes Street[]Startingin 1893(Pine Street Bridge)] This bridge facilitated commerce between Topeka and Paducah without having to go through Council Bluffs or Wichita Lake
