Lansing, Kansas is a town in Payne County, Kansas, United States. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Lansing is one of three towns in Payne County and the only one with a post office that remains open continuously since 1872. The first settlers in Lansing were Michael and Jane Ladd who moved to the area from Overland Park in 1868. They built a cabin on the south side of what is now Hastings Avenue and Old Meridian Road. In 1870, John Auld moved to Lansing from Topeka and started a grocery store there which he operated until his death in 1902. In 1871, James Kapp opened a bakery on Main Street which continued until 1912 when it merged with the North Star Bakery chain. Other early businesses in Lansing include J C Schmidt's Saloon (1872-1900), W B Hennessey's Store (1875-1911), A M Franks' Loan Shop (1880-1910), P F Weiser's Clothing House (1881-1960) and G W Dickson's Grain Mill (1887). The first school in Lansing was built on State Highway 10 about two miles west of present day Hastings Avenue and Old Meridian Road. It was called "Hastings Academy" and served students from Aberdeen through Haskellsburg before being replaced by Bethel School District No 1 in 1922. Lansing was platted as an village by John Senter in 1872 after purchasing land from Anthony Bassett for $1,000 (). On May 6th of that year, Lansing had its incorporation as a town with four stores (), five residents (), one doctor (), two teachers () ,one plumber (), one carpenter (), four blacksmiths () . Incorporation also included building streetsesthesia (). By 1888 all but one business had closed down due to economic conditions or competition from Wichita(). The last business closed down on January 5th 1889; this was J C Schmidt's Saloon which reopened under new ownership months later with piano music playing all night long! One can still see evidence of this saloon today off Iowa Ave., just east of the current intersection of Iowa Ave./State Highway 30
