In 1907, when Lansing was incorporated as a city, it consisted of just over one square mile (0.6 km²). By 1950 it had grown to more than 3 square miles (9 km²). The growth has been due not only to people moving into Lansing but also new businesses and housing developments that have cropped up since then within walking distance of most residents' homes. Today's downtown area encompasses many blocks with modern architecture dating back to the late 1960s or earlier as well as an Art Deco theater building that opened in 1961 and is still used for events today
