Lansing is a city in the US state of Kansas. The population was 21,721 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lansing is located in southeastern Kansas on the Arkansas River, about 31 miles (50 km) north-northwest of Wichita and about 26 miles (41 km) east-southeast of Topeka. Lansing was founded by fur traders in 1855 as Fort Leavenworth,Kansas; it became Lansing in 1907 when it became an incorporated city. The discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill in 1846 led to a rush to find new ground for mining in what had been known as “the Old West” because most gold discoveries were made near Wichita and Topeka. Mining began on what would become Lansing but soon other towns and villages sprang up around the site of Fort Leavenworth, including Naugatuck, Ontonagon, and Indianola. By 1870 there were over 100 settlements scattered throughout southeastern Kansas with a population of 5,000 people living on 640 square miles (1,600 km2). In 1897 Lansing was renamed after Representative Augustus Kelley (D-KS) following his successful campaign to win election as Speaker of the House from that district. Representatives Augustus Kelley (D-KS), John Dickey (R-KS), George Baxley (D-MO), Homer Cummings (D-MN), Charles Sumner(I–MA), William McKinley(R–OK) also served during this time period as members from this area. After World War I ended there was an increase in immigration due to wartime jobs available and new arrivals formed unions to get better working conditions for themselves and their families before moving back into their original homes or remaining in Michigan or Illinois until they could be naturalized U.S citizens. With population growth came increased taxes which forced many businesses downtown where prices for food became prohibitively high without major advances being made locally regarding education or technology despite efforts being made by Mayor Harry Wesselius who also served during this time period under two different mayorships: Tishman Speyer through 1945 and Dewey Bartlett 1944 – 1948 In 1950 voters approved a $5 million bond issue to improve public transportation facilities including streetcars which resulted in significant cost cuts needed for redevelopment downtown which has continued today with few interruptions particularly during economic downturns unlike previous decades when downtown business owners have typically closed down along with housing values resulting in displacement affecting communities approximately 50 miles northeast via Topeka
