At first, there were no firearms available to the men of Lansing, so they improvised by using Indian bows and arrows. The first settler to use a rifle was also the first to die from its use. By 1875, there were enough firearms available for residents of Lansing to form a militia and protect themselves from harm. A new ordinance was passed in that year requiring all gun owners in Lansing to have “round-headed” sights on their rifles which helped prevent accidents caused by people not being able to see what was behind the target. In 1892, a local shooting contest was held at the old Union Depot which attracted many people from across the state. The winner of that contest received a rifle worth $250 dollars and a pistol worth $50 dollars. This event is considered to be one of the earliest competitions where guns were used for recreational purposes rather than just war or hunting purposes. In 1903, an act was passed which allowed individuals within five miles of Lansing to possess up to two pistols per month without having any permits or registration requirements. This law helped increase firearm ownership within those confines and made it easier for people in Lansing to access firearms for personal protection purposes. In 1925, another ordinance was passed making it unlawful for anyone under 21 years old without written consent from an adult parent or guardian to possess any kind of weapon including handguns anywhere within city limits

Lansing has seen many changes over its years including becoming an all-weather air force training center during World War II; becoming a bedroom community for Wichita during the early 1960s with high school students moving away for college; being renamed after Reuben Kilgore (1872-1957) one of America’s most influential businesspeople; experiencing rapid growth following annexations by other towns during the 1980s as more residents moved into Lansing; losing its status as an agricultural center following heavy droughts and changing economic conditions throughout much of recent history culminating in being designated an urban area by the Census Bureau in 2000; experiencing significant gentrification beginning around 2006 when businesses began moving out of town onto Lenox Road; and most recently becoming known for its nightlife with some commercial properties coming online that have helped make it one of America's top cities for nightlife
