Lansing, Kansas is a city in the US state of Kansas. It is the county seat of Lansing County. The population was 17,898 at the 2010 census. Lansing is located on the banks of the Great River, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Wichita and 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Topeka. The town was founded by John Snyder in 1871 as a small trading post on the edge of present-day Lansing Municipal Airport. The town was named for General James K. Polk and his wife, Lucy Kerr Polk, who had come to Independence, Missouri to visit her brother-in-law President Ulysses S. Grant before returning toKansas in1868. They settled near what is now downtown Lansing and built a cabin there which became their home until they bought property adjoining what is now State Street from Abram Thomas in 1874. From that location they developed an early commercial center with two stores, one blacksmith shop and one gristmill; also a schoolhouse and crude Methodist chapel were built soon thereafter around which many local businesses clustered including mercantile warehouses stocked with goods brought overland by mail from Topeka or Wichita; taverns such as "The White Horse" (now closed), "Piney Bend", "The Gopher", etc.; religious services were held at various locations during this time; some later additions included an opera house (1921), movie theater (1928), brick courthouse/ jail (1936), new shopping mall (1974)—all within walking distance of each other across busy State Street—and finally an expressway connecting Lansing with Wichita via Dodge City in 1984 which served as both transportation artery and commercial strip mall today known as I-435

In 1871, the citizens of Lansing voted to incorporate as a city. The city was named after Lansing's father-in-law, James K. Polk, who served as the 25th president of the United States from 1850 to 1853. The population of Lansing peaked at over 100,000 in 1890 before declining steadily throughout the 20th century. In 1951, the city became an entirely rural municipality with a population of just over 10 residents. Today, Lansing is a small town located approximately 60 miles southeast of Kansas City and bordered by Quinton County to the north and east and Ottawa County to the south and west. The main commercial activity within town center is agricultural production which includes raising chickens, pigs, cows and crops such as corn, wheat, soybeans and cotton. Other major businesses include four banks (First National Bank/Kansas City Branch; Midland National Bank; Farmers State Bank; Western Union) as well as several small businesses including two grocery stores (Granada Market & Grocery Store; Topeka Mercantile), two convenience stores ( KBK Foods Inc., Golden Corral), one bar (The Old Days Inn), one vehicle dealership (Clark’s Ford Sales) and one ice cream store (Cherry Lane Creamery). Lansing is also home to three high school districts: Mountain View High School District #1; East Central High School District #2; and Washburn High School District #3 which serve students from pre-Kindergarten through grade 12th grade during busier seasons while other schools in Washburn are closed for lunch during non-busier seasons according to district policy permitting morning classes only for grades 1-8 during those “less busy” seasons while other grades9-12 are open using teacher discretion subject to availability
