Lansing is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas, population 313,641 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The name Lansing comes from the Potawatomi word "lanse" meaning "to cross over." The first white settler in Lansing was John Prentiss, who platted what is now Lansing in 1854 as an opportunity to raise money for his new venture—the D&RGW Railway. In 1861, when Kansas became a U.S. state, Lansing became its capital and remained so until 1907 when Topeka took over that role. In 1907, Lansing was renamed after Michigan's congressional district (then known as the 3rd District) which included much of east-central Minnesota and south-central Iowa; this change was made because Topeka had lost representation in Congress because it didn't meet federal requirements for territory gained from the Mexican War (which also included Colorado). At that time there were only three cities in Kansas: Wichita, Overland Park and Leavenworth. Lansing experienced some major growth during World War II due to its proximity to then-growing wartime munitions production plants such as Snyder Arsenal and Mid-Continent Ordnance Company (MOCO). However, even during peacetime years many jobs did not stay with townspeople but moved out into nearby towns such as Olathe or Lawrence on the other side of Kansas River during construction projects or when companies relocated their operations outside of town altogether; this phenomenon is called outmigration and refers specifically to Rust Belt cities such as Detroit or Cleveland which experienced similar levels of job loss during this period of economic decline throughout North America. During recent decades downtown Lansing has undergone significant redevelopment with mixed use buildings becoming prevalent along two main corridors - Elmwood Avenue between Oneida Street and State Street and I-35W between Washtenaw Avenue and Main Street - giving rise to one of KS' most vibrant urban cores while still preserving much older architecture within walking distance for residents statewide
