By 2002 Lansing's population was 86,836 according to the US Census Bureau estimate from 2000 census results released that same year; however this number has since increased again due to an influx of refugees and immigrants following 9/11th anniversary.[1] Lansing became an American city on November 3rd, 1907 when it became one of 119 towns granted charter status by then-Senator John Sherman Kapp (D-Kansas). The original limits for Lansing were just south along Center Street near its current location – bounded by First Avenue (now Superior), Market Place and East Boulevard – but because so many people wanted to move into what would become known as "the Hills", these boundaries were gradually expanded until they surrounded all but 1/4ths of downtown today[2]. On January 1st 1912 Detroit businessman Augustus Fenton donated land east side Main Street between Third Avenue and State Streets for $25000 which would later be renamed Kirkland Park[3]. This marked Michigan Avenue's first cross streets with east side streets being considered west side streets since Cass County originally included only Livingston County north thereof (the exceptions being Indianola Township which did not include Cass County).[4] The name "Lansing" originated when developer Augustus Fenton donated land east side Main Street between Third Avenue and State Streets for $25000 which would later be renamed Kirkland Park[3]. This marked Michigan Avenue's first cross streets with east side streets being considered west side streets since Cass County originally included only Livingston County north thereof (the exceptions being Indianola Township which did not include Cass County).[4]
