Lansing is located on the central bank of the Mennonite River right near its confluence with the Chicago River and it became a town in 1872 when it annexed all of Holt County including present-day Lansing and parts of Clay and Sumner Counties. The first post office in Lansing was established in 1871, but no town foundation date can be found. In 1893, Lansing incorporated as a city under authority from Topeka; however, due to low population growth there was little progress made to establish municipal government until 1907 when a vote passed by city council decided that Lansing should have its own police department and fire department independent from Topeka police and fire departments respectively. In November 1912, voters approved an amendment to the City Constitution permitting for an "incorporation which will annex additional unincorporated areas within our limits." This action allowed for annexation by other cities or towns within Lansing territory as well as adjacent counties such as Porter and Newton as long as these municipalities agreed not to compete with Lansing for services or resources. The first annexation took place in 1916 when Albion Heights annexed neighboring Farmington Township; followed by Grandview Heights in 1923 before finally Lapeer Township in 1927 which joined Snyder County after becoming part of Michigan Territory following Indian Removal on April 14, 1830). The city has seen rapid growth since then with new development concentrated along Mennonite Boulevard which runs through downtown between State Street/Michigan Avenue and Westport Drive/Broadway Avenue corridors towards I-435 (the former routing extending southward from downtown onto Plymouth Road) while other streets leading away from downtown feature more modest residential buildings dating back to World War II: east-west Kossuth Street running through north side commercial districts now home to business parks while west side Frye Road becomes Main Street again serving mostly residences before terminating at I-435 about one mile northeast of downtown where traffic slowly turns into ramps heading southeastbound towards Lawrenceburg Airport; east side Kossuth returns almost immediately forming what used to be called South Side Drive until reaching Justicesburg Parkway where it opens up into fields just past Southside Elementary School before continuing northwest on Justiceburg Pike turning abruptly northeast onto University Avenue (now State Route 6), paralleling that route until terminating at Ewing Boulevard just west of Central High School (formerly Southside High School).
