In 1859, Lansing, Kansas was the site of one of the first gunfights in that state. It began when a group of men from nearby Topeka raiding a farm on July 3st, 1859 came across three firearms used by farmers to protect their property. One farmer shot one of the raiders and killed him; the other two men retreated into cover and held off the attackers until reinforcements arrived. The shootout ended with six men dead, three wounded, and four horses captured. This event is also considered to be the beginning of gun control in that state.
