Ammunition has been a part of Lansing, Kansas for over 150 years. One of the earliest ammunitionories in Lansing was opened by John W. Engle in 1853. The business continued until 1870 when it was purchased by J.E. Smith and Sons who renamed it the Armoury. In 1881, the Armoury became the first ammunition store in Lansing when it opened at 4th and State Streets. The store operated until 1907 when it closed due to financial difficulties. In 1912, an ammunition company called The Arsenal was established in Lansing with $10,000 from Jno Aitken and William Hickey who were also owners of the local Hotel Michigan on 4th Street between Capitol and State Streets. It produced shells for guns made by S&H Ammunition Company which then became known as Armoury Ammunition Corporation (AAC). In 1916, AAC merged with Ransom-Ives Corporation which had production operations in Bridgeport, Connecticut and Newark, New Jersey In 1927, Armoury Ammunition Corporation merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company which had production operations in Springfield Armory near Derby County line along I-435 east of Wichita Falls Texas as well as plants at White Sands Beach outside Albuquerque New Mexico and Ft Worth Texas producing both non-prescription (NRA) ammo as well as military rounds such as .30 caliber machine guns used during World War II Winchester Repeating Arms Company divested itself of its military ammo businesses including AAC in 1960 but continued to produce legal hunting cartridges under the name Winchester Ammunition Factory Incorporated until 1984 The current owner is Hornady Manufacturing Co.,Inc., a subsidiary of American Outdoor Brands Incorporated
