During the 1940s and 1950s there was a large growth in optical accessory businesses in KCK due to World War II veteran demand for new optic equipment. Many veterans returned home with new eyes and needed new devices to help them function comfortably inside and outside the military environment. After the war ended, many original Optical device manufacturers closed down or went out of business because they lacked wartime production quotas set by the government. However, some companies such as Bendix Corporation continued to operate during this time period producing refurbished birth defects-safe devices for those returning from combat zones (such as Iraq). However, it wasn't until 1961 when one man made an impact on Kansas City's optical accessory industry when he opened upMrWohl'sWatchShop again on Main Street within walking distance of both downtownKCKandthe UniversityofKansas(now Wichita State University). At MrWohl's shop you could purchase all sorts of watches - from conventional quartz watches to high end sportwatches - along with telescope/binocular/eyeglasses manufacturer options like Guided Light microscopes (GLLM) or Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescopes (SCAT). That same year, The Optical Shop moved to its current location at 47th and Main Street. In 1951, the KMOX Radio station was moved to its current location on 6thStreet east of Lawrence Avenue. In 1957, The Optical Shop became an anchor tenant of the then new Regal Cinemas at47th and Main Street. In 1979, the Regal Cinemas closed and the building reverted back to its previous structure with a new name as Regal Plaza.In 1984-1985, The Optical Shop underwent a major renovation that included installation of state of the art digital photo frames. This project also included expansion of their stock of optical products including microscopes, telescopes and binoculars. On October 20th 1985, The OpticalShop reopened under its new name - Kansas City Optics Incorporated (KCO). KCO continued to operate as an independently owned business until it merged into Tyco International Corporation in 1997
