Kansas City, Kansas was founded on August 16, 1855 by James K. Polk and his wife, Julia Earle. Kansas City, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 168,651. The name was chosen by General James B. McPherson to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Sedgwick Heights in 186 and was incorporated as a municipality on November 3, 1871. The first settlers in what is now Kansas City were white farmers who arrived during the Mexican–American War (1846-1847). They named their new town after General James B. McPherson because he helped lead their side in that conflict. When Mexico ceded control of Texas to America in 1848, the United States became responsible for all Mexican territory east of the Rio Grande, including Kansas City proper. So although American forces didn't fight against Mexico during that time period, American settlers did manage to rename most major Mexican towns and cities after local military commanders or political leaders who had fought for America against Spain or Mexico – such as San Miguel de Allende and Guadalupe Victoria – so that Americans would feel like they were living within their own country again instead of outside it happening across the border from them. The first building in what is now Kansas City was built on land donated by Sam Rayburns; it was called "the Arsenal" and served as a munitions depot for Union troops fighting in the Civil War (1861-1865). After Missouri seceded from America and joined 27 other southern states into the Confederate States of America following secession, Kansas City remained an integral part of this region and saw heavy involvement by Union forces during its war with slavery (1863- 1865). In 1865, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House near Petersburg Va., many key members including Mayor John Brownell came prisoner with him; Brownell later founded The Brownells Academy Preparatory School which until recently still operated out of Rayburns Arsenal building today! When Reconstruction ended following Reconstruction South Carolina became one of 19th century's first black states; it allowed African Americans to become citizens starting on January 1st 1870 which led to many businesses being opened up by these newly minted citizens seekingAfrican American employees as much as possible since hiring someone Of African descent often led to discrimination back then! One business that started up immediately due to this change was The Armoury & Blacksmithy which originally functioned just as an armoury but soon began selling clothing too! This store quickly became known throughout downtown KC for stocking everything from ladies wear to shoes!) By 1890 there were over 350 stores operating in downtown KC alone making it one OF THE LARGEST AND trendsetting areas IN AMERICA! During World War II (1939-1945),Kansas City played host to 2 air shows/opener episodes thereof: "The Big Day" & "Battle Cry". On October 14th 1941 both airshows took place at Municipal Stadium located northwest corner 5th Street & Main Street north side where over sixty thousand people watched Boeing 707 bombers carrying Japanese Imperial Army Air Forces fighter planes attack Ulysses S Grant's army stationed at Fort Donelson opposite!! It has been said that if you look hard enough you can still see some bullet holes left behind from those two exhibitions…..and YES THAT’S RIGHT….both airshows took place ON PUBLIC AIRCRAFT WITH NO PREMISE OF A GUN SHOW OR BASEBALL GAME EVER BEING HELD AT THE STATUE PARK CIRCLE ALSO LOCATED NEARBY!!!
