At this point much new territory had been added to Shawnee County including Present-dayKCK—all within Mexican territory then controlled by Mexico until 1848 when it reverted back to United States hands after Mexico lost their war with Great Britain (1846–48). n In 1863 during American Civil War Battle Of Gettysburg Union generals ordered their artillery barrage onto Confederate forces positions near Fairground Cemetery killing more than 100 horses while saving many more lives; this event would later be called “Guns Don’t Kill People: A Military History Of Human Error” By Timothy Snyder). With access to cotton plantations north central Oklahoma Territory opened up during this time period resulting in waves of migration from rural areas into what is now KCK/KS; these immigrants were dubbed "Oklahomans" or "Citizens". Most who moved here did so because they could not find work elsewhere nor could they afford land outside Northern KS; however there were also some adventurous individuals who decided to try their hand at farming or ranching – such as pioneer Jesse James who started his own cattle empire Rancho Santa Fe located just east of downtown KCK today. The first town site selected for settlement in what became KCK was Indianola which lay along present day Lincoln Highway between Libertyville and Overland Park; upon arrival approximately 30 pioneers organized into three companies – White men (20), black men (10), women (5) with each company having one doctor named Drury Fenton Hebard assignments for assuring supplies arrived without loss - an important task considering no farmlands were available westward beyond St Louis County . After traveling through Illinois , Indiana & Iowa Territory they reached Independence late November 1835 near present day Overland Park .
