In 1839, anti-slavery activists founded another group called The Anti-Slavery Society to propagate abolitionist ideals among people living in Independence County near Topeka. At this time, there were only a few small towns located within present dayKansas City limits; these towns included Lawrence (now Overland Park), Topeka, Morrissey (now Emporia), Newton (now Olathe), Pittsburg (now Prairie Village), Holland (now Defiance), and Winfield (now Fort Worth). When slavery was abolished in America on January 1st 1865 by Abraham Lincoln via Executive Order 1272,[1] all slaveholders were required to free their slaves within five years or face forfeiture of their lands and personal property worth $250 million ($ when measured against payroll for that year).[2][3] However many individuals did not immediately Free their slaves because they could still earn money working off their bonds.[4][5] Many more people who owned slaves continued working off their bonds until 1865 when they were given formal Liberator documents recognizing them as free men[6]. These formal Liberator documents are still held by some family members today who have never voluntarily give them up.[7][8] Kansas City experienced heavy growth during Reconstruction following American Civil War due to its key role as a transportation hub for goods brought into Thoroughly Modern Day America via railroads such as Union Pacific Railroad and The Central Pacific Railroad; its access to water resources; its location adjacent to major rivers such as Platte and Arkansas; its proximity to new industrial areas such as Cottonwood Heights annexation in 1893,[9][10] Ernie Snively annexation in 1907,[11],[12][13][14])[15],[] [] [][] [][] [][][]
