The city's roots can be traced back to November 4, 1854 when General James Hays ordered Baltimore-based Major John Auldridge to establish Camp Dodge on land near present-day Commerce Street and Main Avenue in downtownKCK while he made preparations for his Expedition against Fort Sumter which began on April 12, 1857 Auldridge had been sent east by Governor Andrew Johnson on an expedition meant to assess whether or not Mexico would recognize Texas' annexation into Texas following their Mexican-backed war victory against Santa Anna’s forces at San Jacinto on February 6, 1836 When Hays learned about Auldridge's encampment he ordered him recalled immediately without any explanation subsequent investigations revealed that Auldridge had not intended any military action other than providing supplies for troops fighting at Fort Sumter As a result of this fiasco Hays was forced to apologize both to Auldridge personally as well as Secretary of War Martin Van Buren who had direct responsibility for military affairs in those days Following his defeat at SumterHays turned his attention towards developing new national borders which would provide more opportunities for settler expansion into newly acquired territories during the height of Manifest Destiny fever On July 9,1859 Hays order called forth 136 pioneers from Manhattan (now New York) under Captains George Fenton Jr., Augustus McClellan & Ebenezer Morse who set off down what is now I-435 south from downtownKCK taking Shelter Rock Road before continuing along current US 69W until they reached Pawnee Creek where they stopped unexpectedly due to bad weather conditions just north of present day Topeka In less than three weeks they had explored 2 miles (3 km) all around present day KCK including what is now University Heights neighborhood which lay within today's Indian Hills neighborhood adjacent Howland Park east side only 8 miles (12 km) south from downtownKCK while still travelling along overlapping routes known today as Main Street NW/I-435 NE
