Kansas City, Kansas was founded in 1861 as the first city in what is now Missouri. The city quickly became a center of cotton culture and politics, and its arsenal became one of the most important in the Union. In 1871, Kansas City joined the American Federation of Labor, becoming one of the largest unions in America. By 1912, Kansas City had become an important cultural center with its own weekly newspapers and leading theater companies. In 1933, Kansas City was hit by a devastating tornado that killed over 100 people and destroyed many buildings. The city recovered quickly, but experienced significant decline during World War II until it regained some of its former glory following the war. In recent years, Kansas City has seen a resurgence in both economy and development. It has become one of the fastest-growing cities in America and is home to several major downtowns including Midtown KC, which is known for its high-end shopping mall complexes; Downtown KC (formerly Midtown Square), which hosts large corporate headquarters}; Modern Art District; and Live Oak Park/Highlands neighborhoods which are considered to be some of the most affordable housing options in town. The land that now makes up Kansas City was called Shawnee County by early settlers and then Benton County. In 1854, when Kansas Territory was created from parts of Illinois and Missouri, Benton County became one of its first counties. The county seat was Independence until 1873 when it moved to Topeka (then called Hutchinson). In 1907, Independence merged with Topeka to form what is now known as KCMO.[3] KCMO currently has an estimated total population of around 13 million people[4]. The history of KCMO begins with two small towns – Pawnee and Bellefontaine – forming part of what would become KCMO on January 1, 1906. At that time, Pawnee had a population of about 350 and Bellefontaine had a population of about 400; both were located near what is now downtown KCMO. That same year saw the founding of the Republican Party in town; at that time most residents were Democrats or independents who voted for local party bosses instead of voting themselves representatives. In 1908, there were only 2 businesses in town – two stores run by merchants from nearby Topeka – but by 1909KCMO had 12 businesses including three banks: First National Bank (founded 1912), People’s Trust Company (founded 1913), and Union Pacific Railroad Passenger Depot & Ticket Office (founded 1915).[5] A number of large blocks in downtown KCMo have been designated as Historic Districts statewide because they are significant examples of American architecture from this period:[6][7][8][9] these include Third Street between Main and Jefferson Streets which served as business district headquarters until 1978; Fourth Street between Main and Harrison Streets which served as commercial district headquarters until 1985; Fifth Avenue between Main and Douglas streets which served as commercial district headquarters until 1995; Seventh Avenue between Main and Lamar streets which served as commercial district headquarters until 2001; Eighth Avenue between Main and Tillman streets which served as commercial district headquarters until 2003; Ninth Avenue between Main and Randolph streets whichserved as commercial district headquarters until 2006; Tenth AvenuebetweenMainandRandolphstreetswhichservedascommercialdistrict Headquartersuntil2008

The city grew rapidly due to its location on the confluence of the Missouri River and the Arkansas River, which made it an important transportation hub for settlers and Merchants. In 1871, Kansas City became a state-level city, and in 1907 it was designated as the capital of the new state of Oklahoma. Despite this ranking changes, Kansas City remained an important cultural center in both states until its decline in population during World War II. Today, Kansas City is a small town located just east of downtown KCK with a population of only 65,000 residents. Kansas City's history can be traced back to 1865 when General James H. Brown established himself as the headstrong young general commanding Ulysses S. Grant's Cavalry Division at Fort Riley near present day Topeka. Brown had recently been relieved from command of Indian Affairs after a series of disastrous failures that had embarrassed President Abraham Lincoln and undermined his support among Republicans nationwide; he took up arms to create his own government within America's newly formed Union army under Secretaryof War Edwin Mudd. Brown quickly won over many local leaders including Mayor John Wahlstrom and Councilman Alexander Beattie before setting up shop at what would become known as "The Old Place." With no more than 27 buildings standing in 1965 when this report was compiled (the number today is closer to 350), Browns Progressivism firmly rooted Kansascity within American society for years to come - even into the days following World War II when most downtown businesses were lost to demolition or relocation thanks largely to wartime prosperity considerations alone! Though Browns Progressivism may have been short-lived outside KCK proper (the old neighborhood saw much displacement during post-war development), it did touch many aspects of everyday life hereabouts - witness The Wichita Eagle's unique nickname "The Welcome Capital" because so many early immigrants who called KCK home settled hereabouts during their first few years onAmerican soil! Even today locals proudly refer to themselves as "KS CITY BOYS!" not only because they were born here but also because they uniformly upheld professionalism and hard work ethic throughout their careers regardless of social status or political affiliation - qualities often missing from other rural communities experiencing similar economic success at that time! It wasn't simply blue-collar workers like those found throughout most major Midwestern cities during that era who benefited from advances made during The Great Compromise; instead middle class familiessimilarly enjoyed increased access to education, employment opportunities, and quality homes while still able to maintain close ties with their rural roots! This type of cohesive community spirit has long been missing from some similarly sized towns across North America since WWII - something that researchers are currently exploring through surveys conducted throughout western KansasCity following several devastating natural disasters such as Katrina/ Rita etc... As one resident succinctly put it: "When you're living right there [in KCK], you know everything about everybody else." True enough - something quite unique for a town erected around commerce interests barely sustained by farming or manufacturing activities 10 miles away! Even today nearly 1/3rds (322)of all jobs located in downtown KCK are related directly or indirectly thereto - makingKCK home where innovation begins...
