Kansas City, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri. The population was 1,648 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area and is the county seat of Shawnee County. KCK was founded on October 25, 1854 by George Custer, who named it for his regiment that had fought in the Mexican-American War and also for James K. Polk, then President of the United States. The original town site was located near present-day Union Station on Main Street in what is now Independence Park. The first post office inKCK was established on July 22, 1858; it was renamed to KCK on December 12th of that year after General George Custer's regiment which had fought in Mexico and won a Congressional gold medal for its service there. On March 3rd, 1861KCK became one of several communities within Dodge County when that county was created from parts of Butler and Newton Counties following the American Civil War (1861-65). After Kansas become a U.S. State in 1912, cities within Dodge County were authorized to form their own government as municipal governments with home rule under state laws rather than answer to a countywide government like KCK did at this time (see History of Kansas City). In 1923 Main Street between Vine and Market Streets became the first major commercial district outside downtown KCK when construction began on what would eventually become known as "the Strip". That same year saw the opening of The Star-Biltmore Hotel which served as both an early movie theater and casino until it closed in 1984 due to financial problems; since then most major theaters have been located inside or around downtown KCK or near shopping malls/entertainment complexes such as Midtown Crossing or Shawnee National Forest Park (see Top 10 Downtowns In America For Businesses). On November 16th 1946 Mayor Harry Sacks announced plans for development along Main Street eastward from Randolph through Highland into what would eventually become Riverfront Park; although no actual development took place until 1968 when The Gateway Shopping Center opened adjacent to IMAX Theater #1 across from Arrowhead Stadium - this would be followed by similar stores and restaurants opening up along Interstate 70 just east of main street over ensuing years culminating with Walmart becoming anchor store insideRiverfront Park complex starting in 1997 (#2 Walmart Now In Tulsa) makingKCK one of America's largest urban open-air shopping centers - all while still keeping much older neighborhoods like Dutchtown intact despite pronounced loss thereof during late 1990s suburban exodus see map below showing loss rates (%) versus growth rates (%)
