Kansas City, Kansas is home to one of the oldest commercial ammunition stores in the United States. The store was established in 1867 by James W. Caldwell and his wife, Sarah. The store was first located on Second street in downtown KC and later moved to its current location on Jackson avenue. At present, the store has been sold off and renovated several times but it still remains a popular tourist destination for Ammunition enthusiasts from all over the country. The history of ammunition in Kansas City began with European powder weapons made for muzzle loading pistols and rifle barrels that could not be reloaded due to their fouling abilities. In 1847, Major John Cope developed a new type of powder gun that fired shot without any need for a Reloading Kit or Powder Charges; this weapon became known as the Rifleman's Friend. This revolver fired British blue lead balls which were about an inch diameter at 100 yards (91 meters). Ammunition then became available for these guns which could be bought pre-packaged or manufactured locally using Native American arrowheads, stone axes, and even animal dung as projectiles. In 1865, Colonel John Sibley purchased land adjacent to First Street and Jefferson Avenue where he founded what would become known as "The Arsenal".
