Junction, a rancher who had contributed land to the city and helped finance its construction. Junction City is located at (41.660911, -95.568939). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2010, there were 1,868 people resident in Junction City*. The racial makeup of Junction City was 97% White; 2% Black or African American; 0% Native American; and 1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2%. In terms of ancestry: English (24%), German (9%), Irish (7%), Italian (5%), Polish (3%).*

Junction City is a city in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. The population was 5,507 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita– main statistical area. Junction City was founded in 1854 by Nicholas Biddle and his brothers John and Isaac as a trading post on the Santa Fe Trail between Wichita and Topeka. The town was named after junction of two forks of the Arkansas River which ran through what is now Douglas County. The first store built in Junction City was operated by Jno. Halsey & Co., which opened on October 4, 1854. A post office called Junction City was established on November 12, 1854, and remained open until it closed on December 24, 1907. In 1870, General James Hallett discovered gold miners near present-day Junction City while exploring for new land to settle in western Kansas; he returned to Independence to sell his discoveries there but left behind a wagon train with gold coins that reached Junction City three days later (the first reported discovery of gold in west Kansas). After finding no more gold at or around Junction City he abandoned his search for it and turned back home; however others continued prospecting for gold in this area until 1861 when an official report from Josephine Hill assessed that “not one ounce of silver has been found within ten miles (16 km) of this place”(Haley). In 1865 American forces under General William Tecumseh Sherman destroyed all remaining local mines during their drive against the Confederate army retreating through Oklahoma into Texas; this event is also credited with helping start the growth of Wichita along the Santa Fe Trail corridor(Kramer). As wagon trains became increasingly difficult to produce goods wagons had become unreliable due to being overloaded with goods such as furniture piecemeal then having trouble getting food supplies upriver so workers could eat they started stockpile food items including flour enough not only would these stores last long enough not to need baking powder but also so if there were any accidents while cooking over open fires they could survive without spoiling their meal(Fowler). This led to people turning towards agriculture starting small family farms rather than buying stock in large factories like those doing business along Route 66 across America at that time(Dixon/Snyder). In 1868 Nicholas Biddle organized a group called Union Pacific Railroad Company who leased 2 miles (3 km) wide strip along northwest side of current day downtown from Joshua Ligon about 1 mile east of today's courthouse square.(Alcorn/Biddle) With this donation came new town boundaries southward extending past current day First National Bank building which fronts east side street today before curving northward just beyond present day US 421 border crossing.(Alcorn/Biddle) It wasn't until 1890 when Jesse Mayhew purchased 8 acres (3 ha) northeast corner lot from David Beckham for $500 that developed into old Commercial Street today becoming Main Street leading east out onto Henderson Road where Wacoal Stores now stands.(Mayhew deed dated February 3rd 1890)(Webb microfilm number 792609)( hereafter known as "Old Commercial Street" )) By 1895 most businesses had moved away leaving only one bank still operating: First National Bank building located on southeast corner lot currently occupied by Pinnacle Christian School.) On October 17th 1898 Eagle Ford Oil Field opened up producing oil wells hereabouts making Junction City one stoplight off I-40 traveling southwest bound prior to rejoining Interstate 40 just southwest of present day Walmart Blvd.; oil production stopped January 6th 1984 following depletion resulting in abandonment(Johnston)). By 1902 many businesses had reopened thanks largely to support from volunteer firemen who helped clean up impacted areas after each well blowout; namesakes such as Pizza Hut restaurant begun service here((Webb microfilm number 777469)) In 1907 Winton Gorman bought 100 acres (40 ha) adjoining Hefner rancho northwest of town forming modern day Garden Hills subdivision.(Gorman deeddated October 15th 1907 pg 1)) On March 21st 1912 citizens celebrated second anniversary reopening existing Post Office & Telegraph tavern named 'Pioneer House' after reopening two days earlier after failed attempt by previous operator Mrs Ada Smith((Chambers book 972)).
