On December 12, 1892, while an employee of the Cheyenne and Kansas Railway Company in Junction City, Kansas, W.T. Sherman shooting incident took place. The incident resulted in the death of W.T. Sherman, a railroad worker who was shot by 2nd Lieutenant John Sells after Sherman became agitated about being required to switch trains at a crossing. The shooting occurred on a narrow trackside track between two rail lines that were connected by a bridge over a creek which served as the company’s line of communication between Junction City and Topeka (then called Wichita). This location made it difficult for shooters to take cover and make effective shots from behind cover; consequently, many men died or were injured when shot by other soldiers during the skirmish that ensued. Sherman had been working on the side of the tracks adjacent to the railway track where he was discharged from his job as an attendant at local fairgrounds following an altercation with another employee there earlier that day. As he walked away from work, he came under fire from 2nd Lieutenant John Sells who was among those firing into the air in order to scare Sherman into submission. When Sherman refused to stop moving towards his attackers, Sells opened fire again injuring Sherman fatally before retreating back down the tracks towards his engine depot nearby. Shermans death has been considered one of America’s most notorious acts of violence against civilians and has come to be known as “The Shooting Incident” in Junction City – even today its anniversary is celebrated annually with events such as “Wichita's US Army National Guard Gunnery Sergeant William T Sherman Day” and “Junction City Memorial Park Annual Rifle Competition” which pits fired gunners against each other using replica firearms dating back to 1865

Inevitably (given that communal life thrived around such an active business community), elements within the Joliette School District began pushing for annexation into Junction City so they could annex more students without having to worry about school overcrowding or other issues caused by duplication across two districts! With no answer forthcoming from either side - until finally...the citizens themselves organized an annexation referendum! In spite of feeling outmatched by their counterparts in terms of political clout (and financial resources) - residents successfully campaigned to bring their city home! In recent years though - despite still maintaining some very active commercial corridors downtown plus several high-end restaurants & bars sprinkled throughout neighborhoods adjacent to town limits - Downtown has slowly begun losing its key retail tenants as area residents have increasingly turned towards suburbia or rural areas closer to Wichita/ Topeka airports etc... Effectively leaving Downtown Lambert Street completely devoid of any form retail presence whatsoever save for about 3 small strip malls scattered throughout nearly 2/3rds mile radius around perimeter... Which begs the question: What will keep our namesake city thriving & vibrant? And what can we do ensure that happens?
