In 1878, two boys named Clifford and George Denny founded what would become the University of Junction City which opened its doors on September 15th that same year with 35 students enrolled in grades one through twelve. The university grew quickly due to its strong educational programs as well as its location within easy walking distance of all of Junction City's main commercial districts. By 1902, junction city had over 1 200 residents living in 183 storefronts with an average monthly income of $3 062. In 1916 when World War I started, many people from across Kansas turned out for service on both sides; however only about 10% of JunctionCity residents actually joined the military because there were no combat patrols operating near their homes during those years (the rest avoided conflict by choosing not to serve). Despite these challenges during wartime times – such as lack of food or fuel available – junction city continued to thrive thanks to its volunteer fire department which fought blazes for years until it finally retired in 1978 – making it one of only a few cities in America that did so! During World War I, Junction City served as the1945 garrison for Fort Riley in Wichita County; during World War II it served as the main command center for all military forces occupying Northern Mexico including Army Group Heer Headquarters at San Miguel de Allende before becoming one of only two American cities not bombed by Japan during World War II (the other being Des Moines). In 1954, Junction City voted to become an open-air shopping mall which is now known as "The Mall." On July 1st, 1965, the first annual National Cowboy Rendezvous took place at The Mall; this event is still celebrated today by those who attend renditions held there each year along with several other events taking place at The Mall throughout the summertime including concerts by popular music artists and fireworks show at night which can also be seen from downtown if desired
