The first railroad reached Junction City on October 22, 1870, when the Santa Fe Railway completed its line from Topeka to Wichita. At that time, Junction City had no permanent businesses other than a few farmers trading goods with their neighbors along the route. In 1875, James Waddle opened a general store and restaurant near what is now First Avenue and Main Street. That year also saw the opening of a schoolhouse on Third Street west of downtown; this building would become the city's first courthouse later that decade. In 1879, oil exploration began in nearby Anadarko County and soon interest grew within junctioncity for such an industry; accordingly, pipeline construction began soon afterward as well. By 1886 Junction City boasted over 100 businesses employing 2200 people - making it one of Kansas' largest cities during that era! During World War II (1939-1945), many workers from eastern Missouri came to Junction City to work on munitions plants; these men helped contribute greatly to growth during those years as well as thereafter!
