Junction City, Kansas is a town in Riley County, Kansas, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–Hutchinson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Junction City was founded in 1879 by William H. White and named for junction of the Missouri and Arkansas Rivers. The first store in Junction City opened on Main Street in 1879. A post office was established in Junction City on July 14, 1880, and remained open until it was discontinued on December 15, 1960. In 1910, a new high school building was erected in Junction City and named for local pioneer Samuel Sanger. In 1941, the original high school building became a municipal library after it was purchased by the town from the railroad company. That same year, an amusement park called "Frisbee Park" opened near downtown Junction City with a 36-acre (14 ha) site that included two baseball diamonds and three pool rooms/pits. The park closed in 1984 when it became too difficult to keep up with traffic due to its large size; however, portions of it remain extant as part of green space around downtown Junction City today. In 1995, an insurance company built a $15 million headquarters complex at 210th Street SE between I-35W and US 68 which anchored what has been called "the largest shopping mall project ever undertaken within city limits". The complex also included more than 100 stores including Macy's,[3] Sears[4] JCPenney,[5] Kohl's[6] Banana Republic,[7] etc.; 450 parking spaces; 3 restaurants: Subway sandwich shop (closed 2009), China Buffet (closed 2009), Ribeyes BBQ restaurant (closed 2006). On November 2nd 2007 KFC filed paperwork to close all their locations nationwide effective immediately effective September 30th 2007.[8][9][10][11][12][13]. This made Junction City one of only two cities without any KFCs remaining within its borders as well as being one of only two cities without any major retail development taking place within city limits since 1990 across all types of businesses - other notable exceptions have been Wichita[14], where there have been several large hotel projects taking place over recent years culminating with KCI Airport opening up complete with its own free airport shuttle service that connects both terminals with each other making Wichita the most developed city locationally within Wichita metropolitan area [15], or Olathe[16], which experienced significant growth over the past few years thanks to MOVE! [17].
