Junction City is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas, and the county seat of Osborne County. The population was 9,488 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The name Junction City comes from an early post office called "Junction" because it served both junction points on the Santa Fe Trail. The first store in Junction City opened in 1881, and by 1909 there were twenty-four stores in the town. By 1920 there were seventy-six businesses in Junction City, making it one of the most vigorous commercial centers west of Wichita. In 1914, Union Pacific Railroad built a line through Junction City to Topeka; this changed everything for Junction City as Main Street became Union Pacific's main route connecting eastern Kansas with western Nebraska and Texas (the Santa Fe Railway had previous built a line from Fort Worth to Council Bluffs). Businesses rose rapidly along Union Pacific's new route and by 1925 there were 413 businesses in Junction City alone!
