Junction City is a small city located in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–Anadarko metropolitan area. The first settlement in Junction City was established in 1854 by Levi Jenson and his family. The town was named for the junction of two railways which crossed the then unincorporated community. In 1876, Junction City became the county seat of Douglas County. When Douglas County was divided into three counties (Dickinson, Overland and Cheyenne) on March 1, 1907, Junction City became part of Dickinson County. On November 3, 1907, it become a city and remains so to this day. The first post office in Junction City was opened in 1856 and served until 1865 when it moved to Topeka due to lack of space inside the old courthouse building at Sixth and Market Streets. A new post office was built at Fourth and Main Streets in 1875; it served until 1886 when it moved to First Street due to its location next door to an Indian trading post operated by Chief Osage Indian Agent James Armstrong.* In 1908-09 a water system for the town were installed by New York Electro-Motive Company under contract from local farmers John Fenton* (*See footnote below) . The company also constructed telephone lines from Junction City into nearby towns such as Council Grove (1910), Holland (1911), Anadarko (1914), Olathe (1920) and Hutchinson (1924).*) A civic organization called "Junction City Improvement Society" was organized on July 4th 1889 by Mayor Ransom Ladd *(*See footnote below*) . The society collected money for improvements within the limits of town including sidewalks, drains etc., construction of schools etc., acquisition of land for park purposes etc.; but no permanent buildings were ever erected* *. On October 15th 1906 Mayor Fenton resigned effective November 30th after being elected Sheriff of Lawrence County; he had earlier been elected mayoralty with 93% majority over challenger Wm Hamerman*. After Mayor Fenton's resignation several citizens formed a Citizens' Committee which purchased property east side First Street between Third Avenue and Main street from Pawnee National Bank & Trust Co.; designedly named "Fenton Park". This property later became one block east of downtown where we now stand††.* (* See footnote below *) On February 12th 1909 US Post Office inspector Sanger visited Junction City & found that all mail received since December 8th 1908 had been delivered - great news given that services were suspended during their construction!‡‡ On May 10th 1912 a tornado touched down near Topeka & destroyed homes along Seventh Street; some people reported seeing “a very large tree standing tall right near entrance [into] town”* [*See footnote below] . Lasersighting technology has been around for over 50 years and it is still in use today. Some of the first lasers were developed by scientists working on developing a way to sight targets with light. In the early days, lasers were used primarily for bomb targeting, but they soon became useful for other purposes as well. One of the earliest laser sights was developed by Dr. Heinrich Hertz in 1897. Hertz’s design used an arm-mounted light projector to aim a beam of coherent light at a target object. The resulting image was downsized so that it could be displayed on a small screen or watch worn by the user. This type of laser sight was not very effective, but it did show how powerful and versatile lasers could be. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, more sophisticated laser sights were developed that utilized piezos and vacuum tubes to create high-quality images. These sights required much longer exposures time than earlier designs, which resulted in degraded brightness levels but also increased accuracy. By World War II, most Laser Sight technologies had become common standards across all branches of the military and have been replaced only by new developments such as 3D printing techniques

The community grew rapidly due to its location on the Union Pacific Railroad and its access to water resources. In 1907, Junction City became a city.
