Junction City is a small town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 714 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Junction City were John Brown and his family who arrived in 1854. The town started as a farming community with about twenty residents. In 1865, the railroad came through Junction City and changed everything; it made Junction City an important commercial center. By 1870, the population had grown to 350 people and by 1880 it had reached 1,000 people. Some of the early businesses in Junction City were a sawmill, bakery, grocery store and post office. Today most of the businesses are gone but there are several remaining buildings such as the old Methodist Episcopal Church which was built in 1892 and replaced by a new building in 1972-73 and still uses some of its original features today. In 1907 Junction City became an incorporated municipality with a Mayor/Council form of government with four wards This system continued until 1959 when Wichita County was organized into districts (and then counties) which eliminated municipal representation on local boards In 1960 Junction City lost its autonomy when Wichita County merged into Johnson County

However, by 1900 Junction City's population had shrunk to just 100 people due to declining oil production in Kansas and elsewhere in America; however, it still remains one of the most significant towns in southern Wichita CountyToday it has a population of around 50 people
The Junction City, Kansas railroad was built in 1884. The railroad passed through the town and served as a transportation route for goods and passengers. The Junction City, Kansas Railroad was eventually absorbed into the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway.
