In 1856, the Haskell Brothers built a log cabin on their property that became known as "The Haskell House." From here they began trading goods with farmers and other traders along the Little Blue River until they moved their business into their own cabin in 1857. In 1863, they married Annah Hildebrandt (née Low). During World War II much activity took place within the boundaries of Junction City due to its proximity to Wichita Airport; including manufacturing plants producing aircraft parts such as engines and turbine blades. Many people who worked at these plants also lived in Junction City during wartime: many of whom continue to reside there today as retirees or family members of those who worked there during wartime. On July 1, 1912, Junction City became an incorporated city under the laws of Kansas following passage by the state legislature thereof of an act entitled "An Act To establishe intercourse between Townships And Cities Within The State Of Kansas." This act provided for increased municipal autonomy within Topeka-Ajax metropolitan area after years of being governed by single municipality ordinances passed by individual council members operating outside normal government rules and procedures.. The incorporation created new responsibilities for both cities; such as providing social services such as libraries and playgrounds for citizens living within their limits; setting up zoning regulations governing land use; developing streetlights; creating fire districts;and creatingstreet naming conventions unique to each respective city center zone.. The1980s saw significant growth in businesses located within junctioncity due largely to demand from settlers moving into Johnson County seeking more affordable housing options than found closer to Wichita or Topeka. Junction City was founded on the Arkansas River in 1849 by John F. Morton and his brother, James. The town was named after a junction of two forks of the river. The first post office in Junction City was established in 1851. In 1857, the Kansas Pacific Railroad laid track through Junction City, which made it the terminus for passenger trains. By 1860, the population of Junction City had increased to 350 people. In 1865, the Union Pacific Railway reached Junction City and began to build a line connecting Chicago with other Western Railway systems. The railroad destroyed most of the downtown business district and replaced it with a large station complex that remains today. By 1870, there were 1,000 residents in Junction City and it had become an important center for transportation within Kansas County. The city limits grew to encompass present-day Wichita and Overland Park counties in 1886 when they were merged into Kansas County. In 1930, during World War II, Junction City became one of five United States municipalities designated as military zones because they housed heavy industries essential to war production such as munitions factories and steel mills. Residents were required to provide their services without pay while their businesses were closed down or run along wartime schedules that differed from those used at home. After 1945, many small businesses reopened but did not survive against competition from larger companies that moved into newly developed areas throughout Kansas during this time period. In 1994, Junction City again became an incorporated municipality when over 100 years of decline led to its annexation by Wichita following a vote by city officials over objections from residents who felt their community would be vulnerable if annexed into Wichita’s much larger city limits).
