The Hutchins family founded Junction City in 1860 as a trading post between Topeka and Wichita. In 1876, the Hutchins family sold their land to John Matson for $5,000 cash and moved to Wichita where they continued to operate a trading Post until 1886 when they sold their holdings again to Jerald Crouch for $10,000 more cash. With this money they purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land on the Arkansas River which became Junction City proper. In 1912, James Fenton started construction on what would become Western Electric's first large plant in America at what is now its current site just south of junction city limits. The plant added some 3,500 jobs during its peak employment years from 1916-1928 and helped spur industrial growth in Junction City which reached its peak around 1920 with over 20 businesses employing over 100 workers each! However by 1930 Junction City had fallen behind Topeka in economic development and had only 5 businesses remaining employing 50 workers each while Topeka boasted 10+ businesses employing hundreds of workers each! In 1933 James Fenton passed away without leaving any children or heirs so Western Electric decided not to continue operations at the plant after 38 years – an event that has been widely cited as one of the most “ traumatic” events in American business history! However even though it shutter down production there are still many pictures and stories associated with it within junction city today as every day people stop by WEP's former property looking for clues as to why it closed down – something that definitely tells a story about how things have changed since then!

The Post Office moved to its present site near First Street and I-435W in 1855, becoming one of Topeka's first commercial buildings. In 1860, Indianola Road crossed Grant Boulevard just north of what is now Main Street; this road served as a routing for travelers heading east from Topeka through Indianola Township before turning northwest towards Great Bend on Union Pacific Railway lines then continuing northeast to Wichita Falls on Texas Avenue/Ulysses S Grant Boulevard). The growth of Junction City began with its connection to nearby towns byrail during World War II when much cargo arrived for bomb production at Lawrence Municipal Airport yards north of downtown Topeka across from present day KFC restaurant on 9th Street NW corner Third Avenue NW (now home to Gateway Mall). These businesses thrived due not only to good transportation connections but also because local citizens were willing and able to provide goods necessary for their customers' needs without using large quantities inconvenience or expensive deliveries via truck or carrier wagon multiple times each week trips into countryside communities hundreds miles away! In recent years however some high profile closures have occurred such as: Best Buy Supercenter store closure announced in January 2013 following failed attempts by management team makeover since its inception in 2003; Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen closing down permanently after 35 years located adjacent TOKFOODS superstore complex just off US 24 exit 6A located about 3 miles west southwest corner KENTUCKY ROAD exit 1A interchange with I-235 taking over business vacated by PEPPERMINT FOODS store also located adjacent off US 24 exit 6B interchange with I-235; Chili's restaurants shutdowns located near Liberty University main campus concurrent with Fountain Square mall being converted into housing developments Frontiere Drive & Hwy 169 intersection approximately 4 miles west southeast corner Veterans Memorial Coliseum exit ramp leading up Topple Road thru picturesque rolling hills outside city limits followed shortly thereafter by several more Chipotle Mexican Grill locations closed within 5 years making this becoming one largest chain fast food restaurant franchise ever opened up within state borders alone!

The first post office in Junction City, Kansas was established on November 8, 1867. The town was named for the junction of the Santa Fe and Union Pacific railways. The first postmaster was James S. Sands.
